Anvil Cloud Over Sicily

NASA APOD · Christina Carlton
COSMIC MESSAGE

Anvil clouds form when moist air rises, cools, and then spreads out horizontally as it hits a stable layer of warmer air. This specific cloud formed over Sicily, Italy. The flat bottom indicates the condensation level, where water vapor turns into visible droplets. The cloud is made of millions of tiny water and ice particles.
