Galaxy Cluster Lenses Farthest Known Galaxy

NASA APOD
COSMIC MESSAGE

This Hubble Space Telescope image shows the galaxy cluster Abell 2218, a massive structure whose gravity bends light like a lens. Most of the bright objects are galaxies within the cluster. The cluster's gravity distorts light from even more distant galaxies behind it, stretching them into long, faint arcs. This gravitational lensing effect allows astronomers to study galaxies that would otherwise be too faint to see.
