Galaxy Cluster Abell 1689 Warps Space
NASA APOD
COSMIC MESSAGE
Galaxy cluster Abell 1689, two billion light-years away, is one of the most massive objects in the Universe. This Hubble Space Telescope image shows it warping space, bending light from galaxies behind it. This creates multiple, curved images, a phenomenon predicted by Einstein's theory of gravity. The visible matter, like the cluster's yellowish galaxies, accounts for only a fraction of the mass needed for this powerful gravitational lens.
