Andromeda's Core

NASA APOD · Robert Gendler
COSMIC MESSAGE

Two million light years away, the Andromeda Galaxy, M31, is the closest large spiral galaxy to our own Milky Way. Its core, seen here, holds billions of stars swarming around a central region that has two nuclei. This galactic heart likely houses a supermassive black hole over five million times the mass of our Sun. M31 is visible to the unaided eye in the constellation Andromeda.
