Filaments Across the Sun

NASA APOD · Greg Piepol (sungazer.net)
COSMIC MESSAGE

Two long filaments of solar plasma stretched across the Sun last week. These dark, cool prominences are held up by the Sun's magnetic field, each one long enough to span twenty Earths end-to-end. They typically last a few weeks before falling back into the Sun. The image also shows bright, hot regions called plages.
