NASA APOD · John Gleason (Celestial Images)
COSMIC MESSAGE

Comet Hale-Bopp, seen here with its distinct dust and ion tails, was one of the brightest comets of the 20th century. The dust tail, made of larger particles, curves gently behind the comet. The ion tail, composed of gas ionized by the sun, points directly away from it.
