Spherical Planetary Nebula Abell 39

NASA APOD · Jim Misti (Misti Mountain Observatory)
COSMIC MESSAGE

Abell 39 is a planetary nebula, a shell of gas expelled by a dying star, about 7,000 light-years away in Hercules. The central star, once like our Sun, is evolving into a hot white dwarf. The nebula's remarkably spherical shape makes it an ideal subject for studying the dynamics of these stellar remnants.
