Dueling Auroras
NASA APOD · Phil Hoffman
COSMIC MESSAGE
These dueling auroras, captured over the last week of September 2001, resulted from outbursts of ionic particles from the Sun. A change in the solar magnetic field at Earth then triggered these displays over the next few days. The "curtain" patterns seen here are a common type of aurora, formed when charged particles from the sun interact with Earth's magnetic field and atmosphere. This image was taken on October 3, 2001, showcasing the dynamic interaction between the Sun and Earth.
