Streams of Stars in the Virgo Cluster of Galaxies

NASA APOD
COSMIC MESSAGE

The Virgo Cluster is the closest large galaxy cluster to our Milky Way. This wide-angle image, taken by the Burrell-Schmidt telescope, shows faint streams of stars, which are remnants of smaller galaxies torn apart by the cluster's gravity. Astronomers study these streams to understand how galaxy clusters evolve over billions of years. The photo is a composite of hundreds of exposures taken over two months.
