AE Aurigae: The Flaming Star

NASA APOD · Thomas V. Davis
COSMIC MESSAGE

AE Aurigae, known as the Flaming Star, illuminates the surrounding nebula IC 405. Despite its name and the appearance of red smoke, there is no fire; fire, requiring oxygen, is not a factor in these high-energy, low-oxygen environments. The "smoke" is primarily interstellar hydrogen, with some dust, glowing from the star's energy.
