Smooth Sections on Asteroid Itokawa

NASA APOD · ISAS, JAXA
COSMIC MESSAGE

Parts of asteroid Itokawa's surface are surprisingly smooth, a feature scientists are still trying to understand. This may be because Itokawa is a loose pile of rubble, not a solid rock. The Japanese Hayabusa spacecraft visited this unusual asteroid, documenting its structure and lack of craters. Hayabusa even touched down on a smooth patch, the MUSES Sea, to collect samples.
