A Sun Pillar Over Maine
NASA APOD · Lucy Orloski
COSMIC MESSAGE
As the Sun rises or sets, ice crystals in cold air can reflect its light, creating a sun pillar. These crystals are often flat and six-sided, fluttering to the ground nearly flat due to air resistance. Sunlight reflecting off properly aligned crystals forms the column of light. This image shows a pillar stretching towards the sky over Maine.
