Plato and the Lunar Alps

NASA APOD · Alan Friedman
COSMIC MESSAGE

This mosaic highlights the dark-floored, 95-kilometer wide crater Plato and the sunlit peaks of the lunar Alps. Earth's Alps were uplifted by colliding continental plates over millions of years. The lunar Alps, however, were likely formed by a sudden impact that created the giant Mare Imbrium, or Sea of Rains. The mare's smooth, lava-flooded floor extends to the left.
