M82, known as the Cigar Galaxy, is very bright in infrared light due to extensive dust features. This Spitzer Space Telescope image highlights the infrared emission from complex carbon molecules, which appear as cosmic 'smoke.' These dust features are blown by stellar winds from the galaxy's luminous, central star-forming regions. M82's unique shape in visible light gives it its popular name.
