Elliptical Galaxy M87
NASA APOD · Robert Gendler
COSMIC MESSAGE
Elliptical galaxies like M87 are simpler than spiral galaxies, lacking the gas and dust to form new stars. Their older stars swarm randomly, giving them an egg-like shape. M87 is over 120,000 light-years in diameter, larger than our own Milky Way. It is the dominant galaxy at the center of the Virgo Galaxy Cluster.
