An Intermediate Polar Binary System

NASA APOD · Mark Garlick (Space-art)
COSMIC MESSAGE

This image shows an intermediate polar binary system, where a white dwarf star with a strong magnetic field interacts with a companion star. The magnetic field pushes out the inner accretion disk, guiding material to fall onto the white dwarf's magnetic poles. Only a handful of these systems are known.
