The Gum Nebula

COSMIC MESSAGE

The Gum Nebula, named for astronomer Colin Stanley Gum, is a massive cloud of glowing hydrogen gas. It is so large and close that it spans 41 degrees across the sky, making it hard to discern against the Milky Way. We are about 450 light-years from its front edge and 1,500 light-years from its back edge.
