Sandy Gas Jets Hypothesized on Mars
NASA APOD · Ron Miller (ASU)
COSMIC MESSAGE
Seasonal dark spots appear near the Martian poles each spring, then vanish. These spots are typically 50 meters across and fan-shaped. Observations from NASA's Mars Odyssey spacecraft show them to be as cold as the underlying carbon dioxide ice. A new hypothesis suggests these spots are caused by explosive jets of sand and gas erupting from beneath the ice.
