The Cat's Eye Nebula from Hubble

COSMIC MESSAGE
The Cat's Eye Nebula, NGC 6543, is a classic planetary nebula about three thousand light-years from Earth. It represents a final, brief phase in the life of a sun-like star. The dying central star may have produced the outer pattern of dusty concentric shells by shedding its outer layers in a series of regular convulsions. The formation of the more complex inner structures is not well understood.
