Comet Holmes' Coma Expands

NASA APOD · Eric Allen Observatoire du Cgep de Trois-Rivires
COSMIC MESSAGE

Comet Holmes, 17P/Holmes, underwent a sudden outburst, brightening dramatically over a few days. This animation from Quebec, Canada, shows its coma, the fuzzy envelope of gas and dust around the nucleus, noticeably expanding. The comet became visible to the naked eye, a rare event for an object that usually requires a telescope. It was a temporary but spectacular sight in the northern sky.
