A Telescopic View of Erupting Comet Holmes

NASA APOD · Igor Chekalin
COSMIC MESSAGE

Comet Holmes, 17P/Holmes, surprised astronomers by brightening almost a million times in just a few hours. Discovered over a century ago, this normally faint comet became visible to the unaided eye. It had already passed its closest point to the Sun and was heading back out near Jupiter's orbit when the outburst occurred. This telescopic view captures the comet's sudden expansion.
