Three Month Composite of Comet Holmes
NASA APOD · John Pane
COSMIC MESSAGE
Comet Holmes brightened unexpectedly by nearly a million-fold in late October 2007. Over the next three months, its coma expanded and faded. This composite image shows how the coma and tail of Comet Holmes changed. Due to Earth's changing vantage point, the comet, which is beyond Mars's orbit, appeared nearly head-on in November but more from the side in subsequent months.
