COSMIC MESSAGE
This dusty reflection nebula surrounds RS Pup, a pulsating star about ten times more massive than the Sun. RS Pup is a Cepheid variable star, a type of star whose brightness is used to measure distances to nearby galaxies. As RS Pup pulsates over a 40-day period, its changes in brightness are seen along the nebula, delayed in time. This effect allows astronomers to precisely measure the distance to RS Pup.
