COSMIC MESSAGE
Nearly 50 million light-years away in Ursa Major, NGC 4013 was long considered an isolated island universe. Seen edge-on, the spiral galaxy was known for its flattened disk and central bulge of stars, cut by silhouetted dust lanes. This deep color image reveals a previously unknown feature: an enormous, faint looping structure extending over 80,000 light-years from the galaxy's center. This structure is a tidal stream, likely the remnants of a smaller galaxy NGC 4013 absorbed.
