Thackeray's Globules

NASA APOD
COSMIC MESSAGE

These dark, dense clouds of interstellar gas and dust are known as Thackeray's Globules, first observed in 1950. The Hubble Space Telescope captured this detailed view within IC 2944, a star-forming region 5,900 light-years away in Centaurus. The largest globule, likely two overlapping clouds, contains material equivalent to about 15 times the Sun's mass. Rich star fields and glowing hydrogen gas silhouette these opaque structures.
