Medieval Astronomy from Melk Abbey
NASA APOD · Library of Melk Abbey, Frag. 229
COSMIC MESSAGE
This manuscript page, discovered by accident, shows medieval astronomy before Copernicus and Galileo. Compiled by Magister Wolfgang de Styria before 1490 at Melk Abbey, it illustrates the geometry for lunar and solar eclipses. The diagrams clearly depict the Earth-centered Ptolemaic system. It provides a unique look into pre-Renaissance astronomical thought.
