A Halo for NGC 6164

NASA APOD · Don Goldman
COSMIC MESSAGE

NGC 6164 is an emission nebula created by a rare, hot, luminous O-type star, about 40 times the mass of our Sun. The star, only 3 to 4 million years old, sits at the center of the nebula. Spanning about 4 light-years, the nebula has a bipolar symmetry, similar to planetary nebulae formed by dying sun-like stars. In a few million years, this massive star will also end its life in a supernova.
