NGC 6240: Merging Galaxies

NASA APOD
COSMIC MESSAGE

NGC 6240 is a pair of merging galaxies located 400 million light-years away in Ophiuchus. This cosmic collision is in its final stages, creating distorted tidal tails of stars, gas, and dust. The merger also triggers bursts of star formation and will eventually combine the two supermassive black holes into a single, even more massive one.
