Genesis Mission's Hard Impact

NASA APOD
COSMIC MESSAGE

In 2004, the Genesis sample return capsule crash-landed in the Utah desert. This NASA spacecraft was launched in 2001 to collect solar wind particles. The hard landing, at over 300 kilometers per hour, happened because its parachutes failed to open. Despite the impact, some of the solar samples were successfully recovered and analyzed.
