The MESSENGER spacecraft flew by Mercury last October, imaging much of the planet in great detail. New data often bring new mysteries. This image shows a large crater, about 100 kilometers across, with unusual dark material near its center. The material's darkness is not due to shadows, as the Sun was directly overhead when the image was taken.
