COSMIC MESSAGE
IC 1396 is an emission nebula, hundreds of light-years across, where stars are actively forming. It is located about 3,000 light-years from Earth. The red glow comes from hydrogen gas that has been ionized by energetic starlight and is now recapturing electrons. Dark dust clouds, made of smoke-like particles, are also visible throughout the image.
