Shadows of Saturn at Equinox
NASA APOD
COSMIC MESSAGE
Saturn's rings cast long shadows during its equinox, when the ring plane points directly at the Sun. The Cassini spacecraft captured this view, showing unusual dark rings and the shadow of Saturn itself. The moon Tethys also casts a small shadow on the far right. Sunlight reflected by the rings, called ringshine, illuminates the night side of Saturn.
