The Spirit rover created this panoramic image on Mars in 2004, mostly by accident. The rover was investigating rocks in Hank's Hollow, a location called Engineering Flats. Its treads left patterns on the Martian soil. The Mars Exploration Rover Mission scientists and engineers were the artists, using the rover as their paintbrush.
