NGC 1055: Galaxy in a Box

COSMIC MESSAGE
Big, beautiful spiral galaxy NGC 1055 is seen edge-on, spanning about 100,000 light-years, similar in size to our own Milky Way. The colorful, spiky stars in this cosmic portrait are in the foreground, well within the Milky Way. This deep image reveals a curious box-shaped inner halo, which is likely a remnant of a smaller galaxy NGC 1055 absorbed long ago.
