The Small Cloud of Magellan

NASA APOD · Bogdan Jarzyna
COSMIC MESSAGE

Ferdinand Magellan's crew had plenty of time to study the southern sky during their circumnavigation. They named two celestial wonders, now known as the Clouds of Magellan. These are dwarf irregular galaxies, satellites of our Milky Way. The Small Magellanic Cloud spans 15,000 light-years and contains several hundred million stars.
