What appears to be a monster emerging from the Sun is actually a solar prominence. This prominence, captured by the SOHO satellite, became one of the largest ever recorded. Even in this image, it is huge, easily large enough to contain Earth. A solar prominence is a cloud of solar gas held above the surface by the Sun's magnetic field.
