Imagine a pipe as wide as a state, as long as the Earth, and filled with hot gas moving 50,000 kilometers per hour. That's a spicule, a jet of plasma on the Sun. This image captures one of the highest resolution views yet of these enigmatic solar flux tubes. Thousands of these young spicules line active region 11092 on the Sun.
