North America and the Pelican

NASA APOD · Martin Pugh
COSMIC MESSAGE

Here are familiar shapes in unfamiliar locations. On the left is NGC 7000, an emission nebula famous for resembling the continent of North America. To its right is IC 5070, the Pelican Nebula, also known for its suggestive outlines. These two bright nebulae are separated by a dark cloud of obscuring dust, about 1,500 light-years away.
