The Rippled Red Ribbons of SNR 0509

NASA APOD
COSMIC MESSAGE

The ripples in supernova remnant SNR 0509-67.5, imaged by the Hubble Space Telescope, are a mystery. The red color in the image comes from light emitted by energetic hydrogen. Scientists are still trying to understand what causes these picturesque ripples, considering if they relate to dense portions of ejected or impacted gas. The remnant is the remains of a Type Ia supernova.
