Even on a quiet day, the Sun's surface is active. This ultraviolet image shows sunspot group AR 9169 as a bright area near the horizon. The relatively cool dark regions are thousands of degrees Celsius, while the glowing gas flowing around the sunspots is over a million degrees. The reasons for these extreme temperatures are still a subject of study.
