Messier 101, a spiral galaxy almost twice the size of our own Milky Way, sits about 170,000 light-years away. It was one of the first spiral nebulae observed by Lord Rosse's Leviathan telescope in the 19th century. This image is a mosaic assembled from Hubble Legacy Archive data and additional ground-based observations.
