Scintillating

NASA APOD · Juergen Michelberger
COSMIC MESSAGE

On June 4, 2010, Regulus, the alpha star of Leo, and Mars appeared equally bright, separated by 1.5 degrees. This 10-second exposure from a swinging camera recorded their gyrating trails. Atmospheric turbulence causes the star's image to scintillate, or vary in brightness and color, more than the planet's.
