The High Energy Stereoscopic System II, or H.E.S.S. II telescope, is the largest of its kind. Its segmented mirror is 24 meters wide and 32 meters tall, reflecting the Namibian desert landscape when tilted horizontally. H.E.S.S. II began exploring the universe at extreme energies, searching for gamma rays from cosmic sources. Ground-based telescopes like H.E.S.S. II are designed to detect the faint blue light produced when gamma rays interact with Earth's atmosphere.
