Airglow over Italy

NASA APOD · Tamas Ladanyi
COSMIC MESSAGE

The Milky Way stretches over the Tre Cime di Lavaredo peaks in the Italian Alps. The sky glows with an eerie greenish light, which is airglow, not aurorae. Airglow is caused by chemical reactions in the upper atmosphere, unlike aurorae, which are powered by charged particles from the Sun.
