Diamond Ring and Shadow Bands

NASA APOD · Stephen Mudge
COSMIC MESSAGE

As last week's solar eclipse ended, sunlight streamed past the Moon's edge, creating the "diamond ring" effect. Through thin clouds in Queensland, Australia, flickering shadow bands were also visible. These parallel bands are caused by turbulence in Earth's atmosphere, projected onto the clouds.
