Jupiter and Io

NASA APOD · Alessandro Bianconi
COSMIC MESSAGE

Jupiter, the largest planet in our solar system, was nearing its opposition on December 3, 2012. At opposition, Jupiter is directly opposite the Sun in Earth's sky, making it particularly bright and visible all night. This series of images, taken from Sardinia, shows the planet's stormy, banded atmosphere and its Galilean moon, Io. Io, one of Jupiter's four largest moons, is visible transiting the giant planet.
