A Halo Around the Moon

NASA APOD · Anthony Ayiomamitis
COSMIC MESSAGE

A halo around the Moon is a common sight, caused by moonlight refracting through millions of tiny ice crystals in high, thin clouds. Each crystal acts like a miniature lens. Their elongated hexagonal shape causes light to refract 22 degrees, creating a circular halo around the Moon. This image, captured as the Moon set, shows the full 22-degree lunar halo.
