Super Moon vs. Micro Moon
NASA APOD · Catalin Paduraru
COSMIC MESSAGE
On November 28, 2012, the Moon reached its smallest full phase of the year, known as a Micro Moon. This happens when the Moon is near apogee, its farthest point from Earth in its elliptical orbit. For comparison, the image shows it next to the Super Moon of May 6, when the Moon was near perigee, its closest point. The difference in apparent size is due to these orbital variations.
