Milky Way Over Crater Lake with Airglow

NASA APOD · John H. Moore; Annotation: Judy Schmidt
COSMIC MESSAGE

Several phenomena combine in this image above Crater Lake. The green glow in the night sky is airglow, light emitted by atoms high in Earth's atmosphere. Above that, the Milky Way galaxy stretches across the sky, a band of billions of stars. Crater Lake itself is a caldera formed by a volcanic eruption 7,700 years ago.
