M82: Starburst Galaxy with a Superwind

COSMIC MESSAGE
M82, also known as the Cigar Galaxy, is a starburst galaxy with a superwind. A burst of star formation, driven by supernova explosions and powerful winds from massive stars, is creating a prodigious outflow. Evidence for this superwind from the galaxy's central regions is clear in this snapshot. The image highlights emission from long outflow filaments of atomic hydrogen gas in reddish hues.
